Fifteen years is right in the middle of the range where this question gets genuinely difficult. A central air conditioner typically lasts fifteen to twenty years, so a fifteen-year-old system is aging but not automatically finished. Age by itself does not settle it. Here is what does.
The one-third rule
The most useful starting point: if the repair costs more than about a third of what a new system would cost, replacement usually wins.
It is a rule of thumb rather than a law, but it captures the real trade-off. Spending a meaningful fraction of a new system’s price on equipment with a few years left is rarely good value, particularly when that money buys you no warranty and no efficiency improvement.
A variation some people prefer is to multiply the repair cost by the system’s age. A high number argues for replacement. Both approaches point the same direction; the point is to compare the repair against the alternative rather than judging it in isolation.
The R-22 problem
This is the factor most homeowners have not heard about, and it quietly decides the question for a lot of older systems.
Air conditioners built before roughly 2010 generally use R-22 refrigerant. US production and import of R-22 was phased out in 2020. It has not been illegal to use, and systems running on it can keep running — but the only supply now is reclaimed and recycled stock, and the price has climbed accordingly.
Practically, that means any repair involving a refrigerant leak or a recharge on an R-22 system is expensive, and gets more expensive every year. If your fifteen-year-old unit needs refrigerant, ask which type it takes before you approve anything. If the answer is R-22, the replacement case just got considerably stronger, and topping it up repeatedly is money poured into a system with a shrinking supply chain.
Worth saying clearly: a system that needs refrigerant has a leak. Refrigerant is not consumed in normal operation the way fuel is. “It just needs a top-up” is a description of a leak nobody has found.
Repairs that usually argue for replacement
- A failed compressor. This is the single most expensive component. On a fifteen-year-old system, a compressor replacement is very often the moment to replace the whole thing.
- A leaking evaporator or condenser coil. Expensive, labour-intensive, and on an R-22 system, compounded by the refrigerant cost.
- The third repair in two seasons. Individual repairs can each look reasonable while the pattern tells you the system is at the end. Add them up across the last couple of years before deciding.
Repairs that are usually worth doing
- Capacitors, contactors, and relays. Inexpensive, quick, and no reason to walk away from an otherwise healthy system.
- Fan motors. Mid-range cost, and generally worth it if the compressor and coils are sound.
- Thermostat problems, clogged drains, dirty coils. Maintenance-level items, not end-of-life signals.
The efficiency angle, honestly
A new system will be more efficient than a fifteen-year-old one, and your cooling bills will drop. But be careful with payback claims. The savings are real and they are worth counting, yet they rarely justify replacing a working system on their own. Treat efficiency as something that improves the case once the system is already failing, not as the reason to replace one that is fine.
Where efficiency does change the maths meaningfully is if you are considering a heat pump. Replacing an aging air conditioner with a heat pump gets you cooling and efficient electric heating from one system, and qualifying installations are eligible for Clean Heat RI rebates — which can move the numbers substantially for Rhode Island homeowners.
Replace on your schedule, not the system’s
If your system is fifteen-plus years old and you have started having this conversation with yourself, the most valuable thing to know is that planned replacement beats emergency replacement, comfortably.
Replace on your own timeline and you can get multiple quotes, compare equipment properly, apply for rebates, arrange financing, and schedule the work in a shoulder season. Replace during a July failure and you are making a five-figure decision in a hot house, from whoever can come soonest.
Getting a straight answer
Ask any contractor to quote both paths — the repair and the replacement — and to tell you what refrigerant your system uses. A contractor unwilling to price the repair, or one who leads with the replacement quote before diagnosing, is answering a different question than the one you asked.
