What To Do While You Wait
A few minutes of the right action can keep a repair from becoming a replacement.
If you smell gas or the CO alarm is sounding
Leave the building first and call 911 or Rhode Island Energy's emergency line from outside. Do not flip switches on your way out. Call us once you are safe, and we will handle the equipment side.
If you have no heat
Check that the thermostat is set to heat and the batteries are good, confirm the furnace switch (it looks like a light switch near the unit) is on, and check whether the breaker has tripped. Then open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to slow pipes freezing.
If you have no cooling
Check the thermostat and the breaker, and look at the filter. A completely clogged filter can freeze the coil solid. If the outdoor unit is humming but the fan is not spinning, shut the system off at the thermostat so you do not burn out the compressor while you wait.
Either way
Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips repeatedly, and do not run a system that smells like burning. Both turn a repair into a replacement. Shut it down and call.

Emergency HVAC Service — Frequently Asked Questions
Do you actually answer the phone at 2am, or is it an answering service?+
Call 401-425-9879 and you reach Horizon HVAC directly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Emergency heating and cooling calls are not held until the next business morning.
What areas do you cover for overnight emergency calls?+
All of Rhode Island — every one of the state's 39 cities and towns, including Providence, Cranston, Warwick, East Greenwich, Pawtucket, Woonsocket, Newport, and the South County towns. There is no separate after-hours service radius.
How quickly can someone get to my house?+
No-heat and no-cool calls are prioritized ahead of routine work, and we dispatch the closest available technician. You get a real arrival window when you call rather than a vague promise of sometime today.
What counts as an HVAC emergency?+
No heat in freezing weather, no cooling in dangerous heat, any burning smell or smoke, a sounding carbon monoxide alarm, a suspected gas leak, repeated breaker trips, or water leaking around the equipment. If you are unsure whether it can wait until morning, call and ask — we will tell you honestly.
What does emergency service cost compared to a normal visit?+
We diagnose the problem and give you an upfront price before any repair starts, so you approve the number before work begins. That holds for after-hours and holiday calls too — there are no surprise charges added at the end.
Do you work on all brands and system types?+
Yes. Our technicians work on gas and oil furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, central air, and ductless mini-split systems of every age and brand, so an older or unusual system is not a reason we will turn down the call.
