A furnace that fires up, runs for a few minutes, shuts off, then starts again a short while later is doing something called short-cycling. It is not the furnace being temperamental. It is a symptom, and in a lot of cases it is the safety system doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Start with the filter
Change it. If it has been more than a couple of months, or you cannot remember, change it before anything else.
Here is the mechanism, because it makes the rest of the article make sense. Your furnace generates heat at the heat exchanger, and moving air carries that heat away into the house. Restrict the airflow and the heat has nowhere to go, so the heat exchanger temperature climbs. A high-limit switch watches for exactly this and cuts the burners when it gets too hot. The blower keeps running, things cool down, the switch resets, the burners light again — and you have a short cycle.
A genuinely clogged filter causes this reliably, and it is the cheapest possible fix. It is worth ruling out first every single time.
Other things worth checking yourself
- Closed or blocked vents. Shutting registers in unused rooms is a common energy-saving idea that backfires: it raises static pressure across the system and restricts airflow just like a dirty filter does. Open them.
- Blocked return grilles. Furniture pushed against a return does the same thing from the other direction.
- The outdoor intake and exhaust. High-efficiency furnaces vent through PVC pipes that usually exit through a side wall. Snow drifts, ice, leaves, and nesting animals block them, and the pressure switch will shut the furnace down when it cannot prove a clear vent. In a Rhode Island winter this is a real and frequent cause. Clear snow away from those pipes after a storm.
- Thermostat placement. A thermostat in direct sun, above a heat source, or in a draft reads a temperature the rest of the house does not have, and will satisfy early and cycle repeatedly.
Things to leave alone
A dirty flame sensor. This thin metal rod confirms the burners actually lit. When it gets coated, it stops sensing flame and the control board shuts off the gas after a few seconds as a safety measure. Cleaning it is routine work for a technician and part of a normal tune-up, but it involves the gas train and is not a homeowner job.
A failing high-limit switch, control board, or pressure switch. These are diagnosis-and-replace items requiring a meter and knowing what the readings should be.
An oversized furnace. If a furnace has too much capacity for the house, it heats the space to setpoint faster than a full cycle takes and shuts off early — every time, forever. Nothing fixes this except correct sizing at replacement. It is worth knowing about because it is a common consequence of replacing equipment by matching the old unit’s numbers instead of doing a load calculation.
A cracked heat exchanger. This is the serious one. Repeated overheating stresses the metal, and a crack lets combustion gases — including carbon monoxide — into the air moving through your house. This is why short-cycling should not be lived with for a whole season. It is diagnosed by inspection, and a cracked exchanger means the furnace is condemned.
The safety line
If your carbon monoxide detector sounds, leave the building and call 911 from outside. Do not stay indoors to investigate. If you do not have a working CO detector on every level of your home, that is worth fixing today regardless of what the furnace is doing.
If you smell gas, leave first and call from outside.
When to call
Change the filter and clear the vents. If the furnace still short-cycles after that, it needs a technician — it has moved past what can be safely sorted out from the thermostat.
