If your air conditioner is blowing warm air and the outdoor unit is sitting there humming without the fan turning, that combination is worth recognising, because it is one of the few HVAC symptoms where what you do in the next five minutes genuinely affects the size of the bill.
Shut it off first
Turn the system off at the thermostat before you do anything else.
The hum means the unit is energised and trying to start. When a compressor tries to start and cannot, it draws what is called locked-rotor current — several times its normal running draw — and it heats up fast. Give that fifteen or twenty minutes and you can turn a cheap part failure into a failed compressor, which on an older system is frequently the point where replacement makes more sense than repair.
So: thermostat off. Then diagnose.
What is usually wrong
A failed run capacitor. This is the most common cause by a wide margin. The capacitor is a small cylindrical component that stores and releases the electrical jolt the fan and compressor motors need to overcome inertia and start spinning. When it weakens, the motors get power but not enough to break away — so they sit and hum. Capacitors degrade with heat and age, which is why they tend to fail in the middle of a heat wave rather than in mild weather.
A seized fan motor. Bearings wear out. If the motor itself has locked up, a new capacitor will not fix it.
A failed contactor. The contactor is the relay that switches power to the outdoor unit. Pitted or stuck contacts can produce a hum and erratic behaviour.
Something physically blocking the fan. Less common, but worth a look. A branch, a chunk of ice, or a piece of debris that has worked its way into the fan housing will stop the blades. If you can see an obvious obstruction with the power off, that is your answer.
Why the “stick test” gets recommended, and why you should skip it
Search this problem and you will find people suggesting you poke the fan blade with a stick to see if it then spins up on its own. If it does, the diagnosis is a bad capacitor.
The logic is sound and technicians do use it. You still should not do it yourself. The disconnect has to be pulled first, and even with the power off a capacitor can hold a charge that will hurt you badly. Beyond the shock risk, a fan you start by hand will fail to start again on the very next cycle, so all you have bought is a few minutes of cooling and a compressor that has been through another hard start.
What you can safely check
- The filter. A completely clogged filter can freeze the indoor coil into a block of ice, which produces warm air at the vents. If you find ice, shut the system off and let it thaw fully before running it again.
- The breaker. If it has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call. A breaker that trips repeatedly is telling you about a real electrical fault, not being fussy.
- The outdoor unit’s surroundings. Clear leaves, grass clippings, and anything within a couple of feet of the coil. Airflow starvation makes everything worse.
- The thermostat. Confirm it is actually set to cool and the batteries are good. It is rare, but free to check.
When to call
Call once you have shut the system down and confirmed it is not something obvious like ice or a tripped breaker. This is a diagnosis worth having done properly, and the repair — if it is the capacitor — is usually a same-visit fix from parts carried on the truck.
